Discover Warhammer 40k at Game Roost

New to the hobby? Warhammer 40,000 (40k) is a tabletop game where you build, paint, and command armies of detailed plastic models—set in a ridiculously grim, far future, where humanity fights aliens, daemons, and basically everything else!

You pick a faction, assemble your models, paint them however you like, and battle it out with dice and strategy. Half the fun is the hobby side, and the other half is watching your carefully planned strategy fall apart on turn two.

For those who love to play, our ongoing league gives players a chance to enjoy the game, hone their skills, and connect with fellow enthusiasts in a friendly, community-focused Warhammer 40k store. At Game Roost, it's not just about the products—it's about the experience and the people who make the hobby fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to start playing Warhammer for the first time?

Less than you think. A Warhammer 40k starter set is the easiest way in. They come with models for two factions, dice, rules, and a handbook. The introductory set even includes clippers, a brush, and paints, so that you can build and paint straight out of the box!

Beyond your starter set, you’ll want plastic cement (for kits that aren’t push-fit), a few more paints in your chosen faction’s colours, and a mate to play against. If you don’t have a mate handy, come into our store and meet some like-minded people keen to play!

How do Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar differ?

Setting, mainly. Warhammer 40k is sci-fi—far future, space warfare, genetically engineered super-soldiers, that sort of thing. Age of Sigmar is fantasy—magic, swords, undead hordes, and enormous monsters. Both are miniature wargaming games with similar core mechanics (build models, paint them, fight on a tabletop), but they use different rules, factions, and model ranges.

Like grimdark science fiction? Go 40k. Prefer epic fantasy? Age of Sigmar’s your pick. We carry both at Game Roost, so you don’t have to choose a side (though you will anyway!).

How do Warhammer miniatures come—pre-assembled or as model kits?

Warhammer sets are model kits. The miniatures arrive on plastic sprues that you clip, clean, and assemble yourself. Assembly is a big part of the Warhammer hobby, and honestly, it’s surprisingly relaxing once you get into it.

If you’re brand new to a Warhammer store in NZ, we recommend going for a starter set with push-fit models to learn the ropes before moving into the full kits.

Do you stock games other than Warhammer?

Absolutely! Game Roost isn’t just about Warhammer—we’re your go-to for all things tabletop. From the latest Dungeons and Dragons board game NZ fans are chasing to trading cards and accessories from our Pokémon TCG store, there’s plenty here for collectors and players alike.

We also stock a wide range of popular trading card games, including Magic: The Gathering, One Piece Card Game, Gundam Card Game, Riftbound League of Legends. So whether you’re building your deck, expanding your collection, or searching for a dedicated Riftbound TCG shop, you’ll find plenty to explore at Game Roost.
